Garmin Edge 1040 Solar GPS Bicycle computer
Garmin's flagship is now called the Edge 1040 and has a ton of improvements over its predecessor.
The Garmin Edge 1040 takes the best of the Edge 830 and 1030 Plus and adds even more.
This Solar edition has been equipped with solar cells via Garmin's PowerGlass, which can provide up to an additional 20 minutes of battery life per hour of cycling in sunshine.
Compared to the predecessor 1030 Plus, they have improved the battery life so that it can now hold power in demanding use for up to 45 hours in normal use and up to 100 hours with the battery saver function.
In addition to better battery life, there are also a number of other strong improvements.
- 1040 now supports Miltu-Band GNSS which strengthens the GPS signal even in the most demanding environments such as close to tall buildings and mountains and in dense forests.
- The new Power Guide feature guides you so you can maintain optimal power throughout the ride. This is combined with Real Time Stamina which estimates how much energy you have left and tells you if you need to relax or if you can push harder and still have energy for the whole trip.
- In addition, they have upgraded the interface so that it is more streamlined and you can access the information you want more quickly.
- In addition to the above additions, they have also made a lot of improvements to training plans, maps and directions.
- On the back of the unit itself, the mount is now metal so it holds up even better.
With Training Planning and Daily Workout Suggestions, you have a strong partner who can motivate you on new levels.
One of the big strengths of the Edge 1040 is Garmin's "Trendline Popularity Routing", which chooses a route for you based on where other cyclists with Garmin devices have biked. In this way, you will be shown roads that suit your needs, and you will not be led over gravel or field roads when you get on your racing bike. If, on the other hand, you have the computer set up for your cyclocross or gravel bike, it will also show you gravel and field roads as well as other paths that are perfect for your off-road experiences.
As with the Edge 830, you can have the Edge 1030 Plus give you three options on routes you can ride. You must choose the distance you want to drive, as well as which direction you want to drive - then you can drive out into the headwind and home into the tailwind.
If you bike with others who have the Garmin Edge 1030 and 1040 series, a communication system has been created when all riders are connected on Garmin's "GroupTrack". There are preloaded messages you can send asking the group to wait for you, offer some assistance with a defect, or you can write them to just bike on without you. It is thus possible to communicate with the other riders without having to fumble with the phone.
With "LiveTrack" you can also see where they cycle and how fast they cycle. So if you are competitive, it is possible to keep your speed higher than the group when you are breaking out on the training ride - or find your way back to them if you bike incorrectly.
With Connect IQ, there are also more connection options. Like the other newer Edge models, there is LiveStrava, so you can see the segments around you and follow whether you are ahead or behind.
Now TrainingPeaks has also arrived. So if you run according to programs, you can connect Garmin and TrainingPeaks and your workouts will automatically enter the computer and tell you which intervals you should run and which zones you should be in.
The Garmin Edge 1040 still has the good old features of easy and personalized setup of your screens, lets you do workouts directly on the computer and you can connect any ANT+ device so you can see heart rate, cadence and watts if you have the equipment in question.
The computer also has both bluetooth and WiFi, so you can upload your training files to Garmin Connect right after you've finished your ride. If your computer is set up on WiFi, it can automatically update at home, without you having to connect your phone, laptop or other things.
