On the wear surface, there is an extremely rubber compound which is made to make your grip better, so you can more easily stop and drive uphill on all kinds of surfaces.
Under this layer, another rubber compound is applied which prolongs the life of the tire, by providing some puncture protection.
On both sides there are two other rubber compounds. The outer provides extra good grip in turns, even in wet weather. Under this layer there is an extra hard layer which gives extra stability and prevents the tire from folding when you turn.
The knobs on the tire are made in such a pattern so that you get a low rolling resistance.
